Info: Our guest is Patricia (Pat) McGuire, President of Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC. She has been president for over 20 years and is credited with saving the institution whose population diminished from 1,000 students in 1969 to 300 in 1989. Trinity opened as a women's college in 1897 next to Catholic University in Northeast Washington, which was then an all-male institution. Men were accepted into Trinity night and weekend classes beginning in the 1960s. Today, the private university of 2,000 students has three separate schools: -The College of Arts and Sciences which is still a women's college -The School of Education which offers master's degrees in education -The School of Professional Studies offering night and weekend classes for both undergraduate and graduate degrees Makeup of Trinity University is 67 percent African-American, 21 percent Hispanic, 6 percent White, and 6 percent International. Graduates of Trinity include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ('62), Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius ('70), and Hearst Magazines Publisher Cathleen Black ('66).
