Born in Khartoum, Sudan, from where her family fled to escape political, social & economic turmoil. She spent the first part of her life in Benghazi, Libya, where she was home-schooled by her teacher mother, until the family moved to Tripoli, where she attended the American Oil Companies School through the ninth grade. She left Libya as a teenager to continue her education in the United States, finishing high school at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts.
